I remember when I was Okinawa there was a story of a serviceman who came off the beach with a cone snail in each hand…held them up and shook them around to get his buddies attention. Both snails struck out and envenomated him, with fatal effects.
Anthony Doerr wrote a short story about cone snails called “The Shell Collector.” The day I read it was the day I learned to fear cone snails.
Eric – Because who ever heard of a poisonous SNAIL? At least, until it’s too late…
Girl Detective – I shall have to seek it out. Cone snails in literature! Excellent!
