So a journalist and a biologist walked into a bar. The journalist was cheery and had faith in the power of human innovation, while the biologist was cynical and expected the world to end unpleasantly any day now. Some time, two cats, and several hundred books later, they got married and moved to San Diego, where Eric (the journalist) writes for the alt-weekly San Diego CityBeat and Miriam (the biologist) is a graduate student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

But the nerdiness was too much for just one apartment. It could not be contained. It needed to be shared with the world. So we started this blog to track science & technology developments. We post whatever we find interesting - Eric especially likes shiny new technology and Miriam especially likes being scientific and doom-laden at the same time. We both like zombies and space-fish.

The blog name comes from a series of 1920s slang we heard on the NPR show A Way With Words - the cat’s pajamas, the bee’s knees, the snake’s hips…and apparently the oyster’s garter. No bivalves have yet been harmed in the creation of this blog, but we’re not making any promises.

If you burn to know more about us, our professional pages are here and here.

As someone who works with oysters an awful lot, I’ve never heard of an oyster garter- but that doesn’t mean I don’t love the site. Great content. Smart and funny, and that’s what it’s going to take to get people to keep reading, and eventually care.

PS- I found your site while searching for ‘hermaphrodites’. I think I got a couple hits on Craig’s list, and then your site.

Thanks, Paula! Glad you found us via hermaphrodites - I am also inordinately proud that we are the #4 google hit for “space fish.”
