About

Miriam GoldsteinAbout Me

I, Miriam Goldstein, am a doctoral student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The Oyster’s Garter features whatever I find interesting – usually some combination of shiny new science, risque invertebrate action, and geeky sci-fi fun. For more info about me, check out my professional webpage.

My husband, Eric Wolff, is an occasional contributor. He can be found regularly at Last Blog on Earth and Science Not Fiction.

The blog name comes from a series of 1920s slang we heard on the NPR show A Way With Words – the cat’s pajamas, the bee’s knees, the snake’s hips…and apparently the oyster’s garter.

As someone who works with oysters an awful lot, I’ve never heard of an oyster garter- but that doesn’t mean I don’t love the site. Great content. Smart and funny, and that’s what it’s going to take to get people to keep reading, and eventually care.

PS- I found your site while searching for ‘hermaphrodites’. I think I got a couple hits on Craig’s list, and then your site.

  3. Thanks, Paula! Glad you found us via hermaphrodites – I am also inordinately proud that we are the #4 google hit for “space fish.”

  4. Very nice. Love the content! Love the science! Love the humor!

I discovered the site via a Google search for creating zombies while at work preparing reports for really boring archaeological sites. Maybe I wanted to create a new work force but instead found so much more. The zombies are in progress though … all is well.

This is a honking wonderful site! Came to it via Double XX. I’m an uncloseted science geek who teaches humanities and dabbles in photography and anthropology. In a former life I taught journalism and worked as a writer. Anyway… this site trips all my circuits (what a 20th century phrase). Good work.

  8. supper… beautiful…

  9. [...] seriously chuffed to be published alongside such writing heroes of mine as Ed Yong, Carl Zimmer and Miriam Goldstein. Also David Bradley reviewed the anthology on his blog ScienceBase and liked it! Proving once again [...]

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Hello! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My site looks weird when viewing from my apple iphone. I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to resolve this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thanks!

  12. Thanks for scripting this outstanding publish..Loved your article content. You should do maintain writing
